3M PPS Cups and SATA QCC spray guns
The 3M PPS system fits the SATAjet 2000
HVLP and SATAjet RP with QCC but you need an adapter, SATA order number 96719.
However, SATA has been asked many questions of QCC and PPS, so these points may
be taken into consideration when thinking about PPS:
Using non-SATA cups may lead to
warranty expiration and color matching problems. To ensure perfect results, we
recommend using original SATA parts.
1. The SATA QCC adaptor becomes loose when mounting the 3M PPS cup. As previously noted, SATA guns
without the QCC feature using the 3M cup adapter require tightening with a 19mm
wrench. Thus, the SATA QCC adapter will not become loose.
2. When loosening the 3M adaptor, the SATA QCC adaptor also becomes loose.
It is reasonable to remove both adapters
together. They may remain connected especially for cleaning and remounting
purposes.
3. The gun becomes top heavy due to greater cup height. On the contrary! However, the balance
does change when the cup is filled. As this is clearly visible when looking at a
mounted unit, the reason is the long, awkward 3M PPS adapter. 3M recently
informed us they are working on a new, modified adapter. Shortening the adapter
is reasonable, especially in view of upside-down painting in the sill area which
is rare, but cannot be excluded.

What does HVLP mean ?
H - igh
V - olume
L - ow
P - ressure
Instead of high pressure , the material is atomized with a
maximum air cap pressure of 10 psi. To obtain good atomization, higher air
volume is required compared to conventional high pressure guns (about 20-30%
according to type). SATA HVLP guns comply with strict California legislation
(Rule 1151) that requires transfer efficiency higher than 65% at a maximum of 10
psi atomizing pressure. To accomplish this, it is necessary to maintain the
precise inlet pressure marked on the gun (29 psi for SATAjet HVLP with full
triggering).

Can I immerse the entire gun into solvent for cleaning ?
If the gun is soaked in solvent, all dirt
particles and paint residue is dissolved. Since the gun features very fine air
passages, the residue is gradually transferred inside the gun restricting
airflow. Since this is a slow process, the painter is not aware of the problem
until much later. The surface finish is seriously affected with color matching
problems, dust and reduced fan width. The cause for these problems is often
blamed on the material, the pressure or other factors – only rarely with spray
gun maintenance. We recommend cleaning your spray gun in a gun washer that is
equipped with a purging unit for the air passages. It may also be thoroughly
cleaned by hand, but never soak it in thinner or caustic
substances.

Can I spray water borne with SATA guns ?
Yes – with all SATA models. The only provision is to not use the same gun for
spraying solvent base and water borne material. We also recommend working with
separate systems at mixing stations as well (top coat, primer or household). A
smart idea for marking separate guns is the SATA CCS (Color Code System) that
comes with all high performance guns.

How do I correctly adjust spray pressure ?
All air pressure data provided by paint and
spray gun manufacturers refer to the air inlet of the gun when the trigger is
pulled (dynamic inlet pressure). Therefore the gun inlet should be connected to
a built-in or external gauge to make a precise pressure measurement. If an added
gauge is used, the following must be taken into consideration. There should be
no quick coupling or nipple between the gauge and the gun because the inlet
pressure may be changed. As a general rule – when the fan control is
adjusted, the inlet air pressure should be checked again. With all spray guns
except the SATAjet DIGITAL 2, the built-in air micrometer must be fully open for
precise pressure adjustment.

Can I get spare parts for older SATA products?
You can obtain the usual wear-and-tear item, spare parts and nozzle sets for
virtually any SATA product – even if it is more than 10 years old. Please
inquire for a SATA dealer near you.

What does DIGITAL mean ?
“Digital” is a term for certain SATA high
performance guns equipped with a digital display in the handle showing the exact
gun inlet pressure.
Why
pressure measurement ?
In order to achieve precise color match,
you must precisely adhere to the parameters provided by the paint manufacturer.
One of these parameters is the gun inlet pressure. The more you deviate from the
required value, the more color shade will vary.
Why use
"Digital Guns" ?
SATA “Digital Guns” make an exact
electronic measurement of inlet pressure and indicate it on the easily read
digital display. As a result, you’ll always have precise color matches and avoid
unnecessary costly re-do’s with “Digital Guns”. SATA “Digital Guns” are
extremely easy to operate because they are about 20% shorter and 20% lighter
than guns with the add-on air micrometer with gauge. With “Digital Guns” there
is no clumsy disconnecting of the air micrometer gauge in order to have the gun
cleaned in a gun washer.
Do the
electronic components withstand everyday work ?
SATA “Digital Guns” are solvent resistant
and are suitable to clean in the gun washer. Of course, SATA “Digital Guns” are
also shockproof and protected against the risk of explosion.
Do other suppliers offer "Digital Guns" ?
Just like many other product innovations,
“Digital Guns” are only available from SATA.

What is QCC?
The patented (US-Pat. No. 6,877,677) Quick Cup Connector allows easy cup installation and removal for cleaning with only ¼ turn. If using the 3M PPS System there is an adapter available with order number 96719.
Attention: Use of non-SATA cups may lead to warranty expire and color match problems. To ensure perfect results we therefore recommend the use of original SATA parts.

What is CCS?
The SATA Color Code System for easy
identification of the gun. For example, mark your water borne gun with the blue
tab or clear coat gun with black etc. You can also mark each painters gun with a
different color.
